Nobody warns you about the speed limit on parenting. One minute you’re peeling a dried mystery substance—possibly fruit snack, possibly Play-Doh, frankly too afraid to ask—off your shirt in the nursery lobby. The next minute, you’re loading a dorm fridge into the back of an SUV, staring at your son, and thinking: Wait. Are you legally allowed to leave? Did we do enough here, or are you just going to eat dry cereal out of a box for four years?
Watching my son, Keegan, pack up for college this fall hit me right in the emotional radiator. But as I watched him load those boxes, I realized something wild: he isn’t just surviving; he’s walking into adulthood as a genuine, grounded man of God.
And a massive chunk of that foundation started right here in the controlled, joyful chaos of Foreverland at Heart O’ The Lakes Church.
Here’s the thing: we believe church should be a lot of things, but boring isn’t one of them. Fun is not a distraction from Jesus—it’s the front door. If you can make a kid laugh, you earn the right to tell them the greatest story ever told.
With Foreverland kicking off again this Sunday at both our Brooklyn and Jackson campuses, national surveys tell us parents across Brooklyn, Jackson, Clarklake, Napoleon, Onsted, Grass Lake, and the Irish Hills are scouting for 10 specific things in a children's ministry.
Here is how Foreverland hits every single one—without taking ourselves too seriously.
Let’s be honest: before you care about spiritual depth, you need to know your toddler isn't staging a daring escape out a side door. We have secure check-in tags, background-checked leaders, and strict safety protocols. Your kids are guarded like national treasures.
If church feels like a dentist waiting room with felt boards, kids check out. Between Creation Cove (Birth–3), Discovery Point (3–Pre-K), and Reign Forest (K–5th Grade), our goal is simple: make Sundays so ridiculously engaging that they wake you up at 7:00 AM asking, “Is it church time yet?”
Fun gets them in the door, but truth is what keeps them standing when life gets complicated. We teach God’s Word directly, helping kids figure out how to talk to God, trust Him when things go sideways, and understand who Jesus actually is.
A three-year-old and a fifth-grader process the universe differently. One is wondering why the sky is blue; the other is trying to master middle-school social dynamics. We tailor music, lessons, and discussions so nobody gets left behind or bored out of their skull.
Kids need a wolf pack of good influences. The faith-rooted friendships Keegan built running around this building as a kid became the exact crew that walked beside him through middle school, high school, and straight into adulthood.
Consistency matters. Having dependable, familiar volunteers who actually know your kid’s name—and notice when they got new light-up sneakers—turns a big church into a warm family.
We don’t hoard the lessons. We send home easy conversation starters so you don’t have to play the Sunday lunch guessing game:
“What did you learn today?”
“Jesus.”
“And...?”
“Snacks.”
We give you the tools to actually talk about real faith at the dinner table.
Kindness is a muscle that needs reps. Through community outreach projects across Jackson and Lenawee Counties, our kids learn early that the world doesn’t revolve around their personal snack schedule.
From baby dedications to getting that first "real" Bible, to the terrifying moment they graduate into The Lodge Student Ministry, we mark the moments that matter so your kids know their faith is growing up with them. Plus we dedicate one Sunday a year to celebrate "leveling up" at the beginning of each school year.
You shouldn't feel like an Uber driver just dropping your kids off at a program. Foreverland is designed to anchor the whole family, giving parents an hour of actual peace in the main auditorium while the kids have the time of their lives down the hall.
Whether you’re in Brooklyn, Jackson, or anywhere around the lakes, pack up the minivan, grab your coffee, and let us show your family what church can feel like.
